Mobile Gaming Getting Unreal on Apple Platforms
Unreal Development Kit (UDK) & iOS together at last
iOS game developers for the iPhone and iPad now have access to Epic Game’s new high-quality graphics and animation tools that simplify and reduce the development time needed to bring games to market.
Epic Games is giving Apple game developers free download access to their Unreal Development Kit (UDK), which has been used to create such popular games as “Gears of War″, “Singularity”, “Transformers: War For Cybertron” “Infinity Blade” and “Batman: Arkham Asylum”.
The Unreal Engine 3 (UE3) is the latest version of Epic’s complete professional development framework for creating games and is available in English, Chinese and Korean languages.
Game developers using UDK to create games or other commercial applications are required to pay $99 up-front fee, Epic also gets a 25% royalty on all UDK related revenue above $5,000.
Apple has become a major player in the video game platform world as it has currently sold more than 125 million devices that use its iOS operating system, which is on par with Nintendo DS that has sold 135 million units, and Sony’s PlayStation Portable with 62 million.
